The Wivenhoe Power Station contract involved construction of the main civil works for a reinforced, concrete pumped, hydro-electric power station of 2 x 250 megawatt units.

The principal items of work included:

  • Excavation
  • Power station construction
  • Split Yard Control Structure construction
  • Tunnelling
  • Other general duties, including the supply and installation of metal work, construction of an access road, and provision and operation of construction services to the project such as power and water.

This project offered unique challenges. Its successful execution required the implementation of a wide variety of heavy civil construction techniques. The construction site was restricted in area and access was difficult.

Program requirements listed 46 individual stage completion dates and called for a high degree of interface of activities with major plant contractors.
