In October 2003, Thiess Indonesia secured a life-of-mine contract with PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) to operate a number of open pits at one of the world’s largest thermal coal reserves.

The contract was an extension of Thiess’ long-term contract mining activities at the KPC Mine. Thiess’ initial works commenced in 1989 with a mine infrastructure contract that included: earthworks, piping, tankage, water treatment plants and other ancillary works.

The ongoing contract involves managing four of KPCs pits and services cover, including mine planning, stripping, coal mining, blasting, overburden removal and stock piling. Additional works undertaken include coal haulage from the pits to processing facilities located up to 15 kilometres away. The contract includes revegetation of mined areas.

Thiess Indonesia’s average annual coal production on site is 15MT per annum from 105 bank cubic metres (BCM) of overburden. Mining across the pits is predominately open cut with highwall auger mining as required. The total workforce, including administration, mining operations and maintenance personnel is more than 1900.
